Kalmia Gardens of Coker College, 1624 West Carolina Avenue, phone 843-383-8145 - Developed in the early 1930's as a garden by Mrs. David R. Coker, Kalmia Gardens is the site of the home of Hartsville's founding father, Captain Thomas Edwards Hart. His house is the oldest remaining dwelling in the Hartsville area. The gardens offer 30 acres of trails that wind among native and imported plants down to Black Creek. On the creek's northern bank is the 800-acre Segars-McKinnon Preserve. Open daily sunrise to sunset. Admission is free. Visit their website at: www.coker.edu/kalmia/.Hartsville Museum, 222 North Fifth Street, phone 843-383-3005 - Housed in an historic post office, the Museum holds permanent collections of Native American artifacts, agricultural implements and silver made in Hartsville. In addition, traveling exhibits are shown regularly. Open Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Admission is free; donations accepted. www.hartsvillemuseum.org Coker College, 300 East College Avenue, phone 843-383-8000 - Visitors are always welcome on the campus of this small, four-year, liberal arts college. Concerts and performances are frequent in the Elizabeth Boatwright Center for Performing Arts. The bookstore in the student union building offers local memorabilia for sale. Jacob Kelley House Museum, Kelleytown Road 3 miles west of Hartsville -- Built in 1820 by landowner and farmer Jacob Kelley, the house was occupied by Union troops during the Civil War. An open house is held the first Sunday of each month from February through December, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Special events include a Confederate Memorial Service the first Sunday in May and a Holiday Tour the first Sunday in December. Admission is free; donations accepted. John Lide Hart Cottage, 116 East Home Avenue -- The oldest building downtown, the home is furnished with period furniture and features a Holiday Tour with costumed docents during open house the first Sunday of December, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
