One Thing You Thought You Knew About Heaven that Might Not Be True…
February 05, 2021Heaven will never change, right?
This one is for those of you that would like to dig deeper into what the Bible says about important and interesting topics. While we should be firmly rooted and focused on making the most of the time God has given us now on earth, we all want to know what to look forward to and what our loved ones who have passed away are experiencing now and will experience in the future. Some Quick Info Before We Jump Into the Topic: If you are interested in topics like this, going deeper in theology, or wisely speaking into controversial questions from a Christian view-point; we are starting the Spring Series of “Sunday Night Services” on February 21st at 6pm at the Nook.We will meet each Sunday night through the spring to go deeper than we can on Sunday mornings on a range of interesting topics. To sign up for the Sunday Night Services (a head count will help us figure out socially distanced seating), email us at onechurchhartsville@gmail.com and let us know you want to be a part of the Sunday Night Services. What We Don’t Know About Heaven…We all have a lot of imagery that comes to mind when we think of heaven. However, it’s important for us all to be willing to change our image of heaven if it doesn’t match scripture. Just because we saw it in a movie (even if it’s a Christian movie), read it in a book , or have heard someone say it; we should start with scripture and let the Bible shape our views.
So, you probably thought…Heaven will never change, right?God never changes, but does the same hold true for heaven?
First, it’s important to understand that people who died “in Jesus” are in an amazing place right now (Phil 1:21 “…to live is Christ, to die is gain.”), but…. the best is yet to come!Surprisingly, The hope scripture gives us is not in “going to be with God” (at least for the long term). The thing we can look forward to long-term is that God will redeem all creation (Rev 21:3-He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”) including humans (via resurrected bodies powered by His Spirit).Then…. God will come dwell with us, not the other way around. In the vision God gave John of the future God himself told John, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them.” (Rev 3:21) (italics added for emphasis) So heaven will intersect and merge with creation! I don’t know if that counts as changing, but at the very least it expands. So the takeaway… Heaven is great right now (Great isn’t a strong enough word, but you know what I mean). Your loved ones that are in Jesus actually gained when they passed from this life into the care of Jesus. However, one day the celebration the entire universe has been waiting for will happen when God brings heaven down to the New Creation and He Himself comes to live with us on the new, resurrected planet earth.Changed People Can Change our Community!!!P.S. One of the things Sunday Night Services (starting February 21st) will give us an opportunity to talk about are the different ideas believers have on what our future in New Creation will look like.
