    Byerly Foundation Awards Grants for 2018-2019

    The Byerly Foundation Board of Trustees has approved nearly $400,000 in grants aimed at helping Hartsville continue to be a great place to live, work and raise a family. The Foundation, which was formed upon the sale of the former Byerly Hospital in 1995, is a private foundation making grants to non-profit organizations and other eligible organizations that work on education, economic development and social needs in the greater Hartsville area.

    “The Board is pleased and excited to be able to help grantees with these projects that were funded this year,” said Jerome Reyes, chairman. “Hartsville is a dynamic community with a lot of things happening and the Board had to make hard decisions among more than twenty grant requests for this year,” he said.

    2018 Grants

    Child and Family Resource Foundation was awarded $100,000 for a program and study at West Hartsville Elementary that is aimed at building resilience, opportunities and aspirations among children at the school.

    Boys and Girls Club of Hartsville has implemented a program called the Be Great Academy and the Foundation is helping that program with a grant of $36,250.

    Cypress Adventures works with students in building leadership skills for both life and school success and they were awarded $50,000 to assist with their year-long programming.

    Hartsville High Red Regime has seen the band program continue to grow and they were awarded a grant of $30,000 to help with the purchase of musical instruments.

    Hartsville High Athletics is purchasing three new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to enhance the safety of student athletes and they were provided a grant of $7,500 for this purchase.

    Disabilities Board requested funds to help implement emergency plans for natural disasters that might affect the clients living in home around Hartsville. The Board was awarded a grant of $30,000 to help with implementation of this planning.

    Hartsville YMCA was awarded a two-year grant of $20,000 ($10,000 per year) to assist with the implementation of a cancer patient program called Livestrong that the YMCA hopes become a permanent part of their offerings.

    Free Medical Clinic of Darlington County received a grant of $10,000 to assist with medical services to patients in the Hartsville area.

    Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Abuse has a grant of $8,800 from the Foundation to assist with educational programs they will be conducting among children and families in our area.

    Kalmia Gardens of Coker College received a $75,000 grant to help with the construction of a new totally accessible observation platform at the Gardens. The Byerly Grant is contingent on the Gardens matching it with another $75,000 to complete the $150,000 cost of the project.

    Angel Flight, which is an organization that provides plane flights for medical reasons, has been awarded $5,500 from the Foundation to help with flights associated with patients in the Hartsville area.

    The Byerly Foundation board members are Jerome Reyes, Bob Brown, Nancy McGee, Susan Henderson, Lex West, Bill Perry, Roger Schrum, Chris Shirley, Linda Weatherford, Rainey Knight and Pat Youngblood. Richard Puffer is the executive director of The Byerly Foundation.
