    Special Announcement

    Book Signing at Kalmia Gardens
Kalmia Gardens of Coker University and the Friends of Carolina Sandhills Refuge are honored to host a reception and book signing to celebrate a recent publication by our friend and colleague, Dr. William (Bill) Alexander. Bill’s new book, “Attracting Birds in the Carolinas” is a great how-to and informational guide for creating bird-friendly habitats in our backyards and beyond. Covering the Carolinas from the mountains to the Piedmont to the Coastal Plain, this book is a primer on the many ways we can attract birds – whether we have limited space in our own backyard or we have hundreds of acres to manage.
Join us for this celebration at the Hart House on the grounds of Kalmia Gardens on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, from 4-6 pm. After a brief presentation, participants will be given the opportunity to have their copies of “Attracting Birds in the Carolinas” signed by the author. Copies of the book will be available to purchase. This could be the perfect holiday gift for that bird lover on your list. Light refreshments will be served on the porch.
This book is the first to focus specifically on both of the Carolinas – it includes information on birds’ basic needs, reproductive and migration cycles, and provides helpful tips on how to modify outdoor spaces to invite avian visitors. From tips on feeding birds to providing nesting structures to improving habitat for birds to handling problem species, this book covers it all.
Dr. Alexander has been a faithful friend to both Kalmia Gardens and the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge for many years, sharing his wonderful talents as a renowned ornithologist and talented wildlife photographer. He has graciously led birding walks and taught introduction to bird watching for both areas. Bill is a gifted and experienced photographer as well. His photographs have been featured in numerous brochures, publications, and interpretive exhibits by both organizations.
As the world becomes more crowded and we continue to degrade natural habitats to accommodate more people, birds, and other wildlife face ever-increasing obstacles to survive. We must work harder to attract and include birds in our living spaces.
Bill co-authored “Attracting Birds in the Carolinas” with his longtime friend James F. Parnell and Jim’s wife Frances. Bill and Jim have shared their love of birding and wildlife photography for decades on countless field trips and excursions since they met as students and professors at Wilmington College (now UNC-Wilmington). Frances Parnell is a retired family and consumer sciences, educator, with North Carolina public schools.
