FDTC’s Dental Hygiene Program Receives a Grant from BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation

FDTC Dental Hygiene student, Symone Lewis strengthens her skills in the Health Sciences Campus Dental Clinic.

Florence-Darlington Technical College recently received a grant funded by the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation to support the goals of its Dental Hygiene program.

The purpose of the “Improving Oral Health Outcomes” grant is to expand the oral health care reach to South Carolina residents through increased free community dental events and updated dental equipment. The grant will target three specific groups in the Pee Dee. FDTC’s targets are children, individuals referred from local free medical clinics, and any adult who needs an oral cancer screening.

“We look forward to expanding our reach within the community and are excited to be a resource that Florence and surrounding counties can lean on for free and quality dental care,” said Alicia Johnston, FDTC Dental Hygiene Program Director.

The funding will pay for individuals to obtain free preventive dental treatment in FDTC's community dental clinic that is located in the Health Sciences Campus in downtown Florence, and it will also be used to update radiography machines, sterilization equipment, and student simulation equipment.

“I can’t think of a more deserving program to receive this grant,” said FDTC Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Marc David. “We have a wonderful dental clinic, a very capable director, faculty and staff, and some of the most dedicated students anywhere. What an awesome gift for FDTC and the Pee Dee community.”

The “Improving Oral Health Outcomes” grant is one of The Foundation’s Healthy Priority Grants that focuses on five areas, including access to care, building a stronger workforce for health, improving the quality and value of health and health care, investing in the health and well-being of South Carolina children and families, and research/special projects.

Trammell Family Donates Chevy Z34 to FDTC's Automotive Technology Program

The Trammell family in Longs, SC has donated their 1996 Chevrolet Z34 to Florence-Darlington Technical College's Automotive Technology Program.
The car, which was quite the sports car in the mid-90's has been in the family for decades. Tommy Trammell, who made the donation wanted to donate the car to the program in hopes that it could serve as a unique educational piece.
"We welcome cars into the family and try to take care of them," said Trammell. "We are sad to see them go, but this one went to a better place. We wanted it to have a chance at a long life."
Tommy's son, Austin, was using the Z34 as his daily driver while he was attending Costal Carolina University. Even when the car arrived at FDTC, the Trammell family put in the extra effort to mail the original radio to the college so that the car would be complete.
"This car is a fairly rare find considering its condition," said Keith McKenzie, who is the Department Head for Manufacturing and Technologies at FDTC. "The car will serve as an educational piece for our students. They will learn to work on the car as they expand their overall knowledge of the automotive industry."
For more information on FDTC's Automotive Technology program, please contact Keith McKenzie by emailing Keith.McKenzie@fdtc.edu or by calling 843-661-8290.

Meet WellSpring Psychology Group Counselor: Rose Yeagley

Hello! My name is Rose Yeagley and I work with WellSpring Psychology Group to provide counseling services for students of Florence-Darlington Technical College. By participating in counseling sessions, students can hope to gain confidence and skills to balance school with daily life and to cope with other stressors. My office hours on-campus are on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the 5000 building. Appointments can also be scheduled at our Florence location or via telehealth. Give us a call at (843) 536-1180 and mention being an FDTC student to get 2 free sessions!

A little bit about me: My journey to becoming a counselor began with attending and graduating from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2012 with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Child Development and Family Relations. Tired of the Pennsylvania cold, I moved to South Carolina to attend graduate school at Francis Marion University, and I graduated in 2015 with an M.S. in Applied Psychology with a clinical/counseling focus. In addition to my education, I have over 8 years of experience working with diverse populations. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a state and nationally certified addictions counselor (AADC and MAC), and a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). My goal is to use my knowledge and experience to help students be successful in overcoming obstacles and achieving their goals.
