In this video, McLeod Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. David Steflik explains that while most heart murmurs are innocent, some can be related to serious heart problems. During a murmur evaluation, each of the heart’s four main valves is evaluated to determine if they developed normally and function properly.

One of the most common heart valve abnormalities in babies is a bicuspid aortic valve. While babies are born with this condition, it may not be detected until a heart murmur develops. Babies and children with heart problems can exhibit signs of heart failure such as breathing fast and not gaining weight. Children and young adults can verbally express their symptoms such as chest pain. However, babies may exhibit chest pain as irritability.

If you are concerned about any of these signs or symptoms in your child, speak with your pediatrician so they can determine if an evaluation by a pediatric cardiologist is needed.
