Altered Book Journal
June 24th, 2023
1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Creating art is fun, especially when you have a special place to explore and experiment. In this workshop, you’ll create just that place in an Altered Book Journal. You will learn basic bookbinding techniques and simple therapeutic art prompts to guide you through an art-making journey. We will start with old books that get transformed into a journal that is perfect for all types of journaling and art exploration. This class will show you the steps of selecting books to alter, deconstructing them, and bringing all the pieces back together in a reimagined way. All supplies will be provided, but bring your curiosity and willingness to play and get a little messy.

1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Creative journaling can be so therapeutic for many reasons. Whether you’re taking time to play and experiment or processing difficult emotions, creative journaling is a great way to get in tune with yourself. In this workshop, you’ll learn multiple ways to get over the fear of the blank page, try out prompts to help you process your thoughts and feelings, and give yourself space to play with colors and shapes. This workshop is great for anyone that wants to set aside time for creativity but is not sure how to start. We will explore many types of supplies and concepts in a safe and supportive environment. This class will answer the ultimate question, “I want to create, but where do I start?” Creative journaling is a great entry point for many other art forms, and it’s a lot of fun!

FOR MORE INFO ABOUT THE TEACHER:
I’m Casey Gainey, an art-loving yogi that lives in a small town in South Carolina. While I’ve always been drawn to creative projects, I didn’t find yoga until 2016. I was living in Savannah, GA, and found myself in a “hot yoga” class. Funny story- I had no idea what that meant and didn’t even have a water bottle with me. Needless to say, I left drenched in sweat but with a smile on my face. I’ve continued to chase that feeling ever since, just not the hot part.
However, it wasn’t until I started blending my morning art practice with yoga and meditation that something really clicked within me. I realized that moving my body helped me to get out of my head. I saw that I was able to express myself with more creativity when I wasn’t overthinking the process. And I found the more I practiced the two, the faster I was able to get into a flow that tapped into a higher power.
In short, I discovered a way to reconnect with my true self and God.
I continued to learn more about yoga while also teaching art and creativity to anyone that would listen. Upon returning to my hometown in 2019, I found a new yoga studio, Our Sacred Space Yoga, and started on the path to becoming a yoga teacher. My training was completed in October 2020, and I became a 200hr Registered Yoga Teacher.
My hope is to combine these two distinctive elements, creativity, and yoga, into classes that help you access your inner world. From there, you can cultivate practices that help you feel more centered, grounded, and like your true self.
