Duke Energy - 2025 Hurricane Season Outlook
May 30, 2025With the 2025 hurricane season kicking off June 1st, we thought it may be timely (and humbling) to share the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) 2025 Tropical Outlook. NOAA is predicting above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year. As always, our Duke Energy teammates are already hard at work to ensure we are prepared to respond quickly and safely if severe weather hits. We know how important it is to keep the lights on and the lines of communication open. We truly value your partnership in helping to keep our communities safe and informed.
The outlook calls for a range of 13 to 19 named storms, of which 6 to 10 to become hurricanes, including 3-5 major hurricanes. They also show a 60% above normal probability for this season. NOAA cites warmer than average ocean temperatures, weaker wind shear, and the potential for higher activity from the West African Monsoon as primary factors for an above normal season.

We are also proud to share that yesterday, the Duke Energy Foundation announced $500,000 in grants to be distributed through the 2025 Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) Grant Program to support severe weather emergency preparedness across South Carolina. More than three dozen government agencies and nonprofits are receiving grants up to $20,000 each. The grants will fund training, life-saving equipment and innovative technology identified as gaps or needs following recent severe weather events – all aimed to aid in weather-related disaster planning and recovery operations. A complete list of recipients can be found here.
While June 1st focuses on the start of hurricane season, we also know that we can anticipate summer pop-up storms that sometimes result in power outages. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that if you experience a power outage, you may call Duke Energy's automated outage-reporting system at 1-800-POWERON (1-800-769-3766). You may also report an outage or view current outages online at www.duke-energy.com/outages or text OUT to 57801.
We will also provide updates on our social media channels to keep customers informed if significant outages occur:

As always, thank you for being a great partner to Duke Energy. I hope that your summer is filled with FUN and that these hurricanes stay far, far away.
