HARTSVILLE, S.C. (Sept 2, 2026) — The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is accepting requests from schools across the state for its free, standards-aligned STEM Days programming for students in grades 3–10.

Delivered through the GSSM Outreach Center, the initiative offers two distinct formats. STEM Days at GSSM takes place on the school's Hartsville campus, while STEM Days on the Go brings interactive lessons directly to partner school classrooms. Both options feature hands-on activities in engineering, chemistry, physics, energy, robotics, and biology designed to strengthen problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking.

“STEM Days are designed to give teachers and students an opportunity to experience unique applications of STEM learning that can be difficult to fit into an already demanding school day,” said Irene Middleton, GSSM’s Director of Academic Year Programs. “My greatest joy as an educator is for students to have learning experiences that help them realize they are capable of far more than they ever anticipated. STEM Days create those moments by giving students the opportunity to investigate, build, experiment, and solve problems in ways that make STEM come alive.”

STEM lessons are developed and designed to align with South Carolina academic standards and science and engineering practices. GSSM supplies all required instructional expertise, materials, and supplies at no cost to participating schools.

Campus visits through STEM Days at GSSM include two interactive sessions, opportunities to meet current GSSM students, and a complimentary lunch. For schools opting for STEM Days on the Go, the GSSM instructional team travels directly to the host school fully equipped to lead the classroom activities.

"The programs are part of GSSM’s broader commitment to strengthening STEM achievement and supporting educators across South Carolina. Our goal is for GSSM to be a statewide resource for outstanding STEM learning opportunities," said Randy LaCross, Vice President for Outreach. "Our Outreach Center team develops and delivers learning experiences that we believe enhance the STEM achievement of students and support the professional growth of teachers."

Fall 2026 registration is currently open on a first-come, first-served basis, with available dates filling quickly. Registration for Spring 2027 programs will open in December.
