    David Beasley, Former South Carolina Governor and now Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program, is to be guest speaker at Florence Chamber’s Membership Luncheon.
     
    The Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce President, Michael Miller, announced today that former SC Governor, David Beasley will be the guest speaker at the Chamber’s Annual Membership Luncheon on Thursday, August 30th. Miller said, “this is a great opportunity to hear from a well-known local, state and national leader. David has traveled the world in many capacities, as a representative of our state and the country. I’m hopeful many will take advantage of this opportunity to hear David talk about his efforts to lead the World Food Program and its 14,000 employees around the globe.”
     
    The event is open to Chamber members and all community leaders. The luncheon will be held at the Florence Center, beginning at 11:45am. The program will include the announcement and presentation of the Business Person of the Year award, sponsored by Wells Fargo.

    David Beasley has been Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program since March 2017.  He guides the WFP in meeting urgent food needs while championing longer-term solutions to food insecurity and hunger.
     
    WPF is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience.  Each year, WFP assists some 80 million people in around 80 countries.
     
    Beasley served as Governor of South Carolina from 1995-1999, as one of the youngest in the State’s history. He received his bachelor’s degree from Clemson University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of South Carolina and taught at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. He is married to the former Mary Wood Payne and is the father of four children. Beasley, 60, is from Society Hill in Darlington County.
