GSSM Still Accepting Applications to its Three Programs

Hartsville, SC – The South Carolina Governor's School for Science + Mathematics (GSSM) is still accepting applications for its Residential, Accelerate, and STEM Foundations programs. Spaces are limited and there is no fee to apply. Apply at www.scgssm.org. GSSM is tuition-free.

As South Carolina's only two-year, public, residential high school dedicated to the college-level study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, GSSM also offers the
most advanced courses in economics and the humanities delivered by a world-class faculty, 90 percent of whom hold PhDs. Motivated juniors and seniors who are ready for a challenging academic program come to the GSSM campus in Hartsville, SC, from across the state to participate in this transformational program. The Residential program's state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, creative classroom experiences, and independent study options are unique in the state. Students enjoy college and graduate-level classes and participate in university research during the summer between their junior and senior years.

Living and learning together create a community of engaged like-minded scholars. GSSM Residential students live in suite-style residences that operate on a house system, instilling a sense of
belonging and promoting school spirit. GSSM athletic teams all have a no-cut policy and nearly 70 percent of students play at least one varsity sport. There are 16 varsity teams and GSSM Eagles have brought home numerous state championships. A myriad of clubs and organizations give students rich opportunities to engage with each other, and the Hartsville community through service projects.

Applications are also being accepted for STEM Foundations: GSSM's Online Diploma Program. STEM Foundations combines the excellence of a GSSM education with the convenience of learning from home. This is a competitive program created for rising juniors in South Carolina. Courses meet synchronously and are taught online using well known online educational tools. Students have online access to teachers' office hours, academic advising, tutoring, college counseling, and student support services. Students admitted to this program will begin their junior year in fall 2022 and graduate in spring 2024.

Applications are also open for Accelerate, GSSM’s virtual, dual-credit program designed to emulate the first year of a college engineering major. Available through participating school districts across the state, GSSM Accelerate offers an advanced set of science, engineering, math, and english courses to students starting in the 10th grade and completing in the 12th grade. Students remain at their home high schools and take Accelerate courses live via video conferencing in addition to their regular coursework.

Residential and STEM Foundations applications are due February 15. Accelerate applications are due February 22. Spaces are limited.

    About GSSM

One of the few specialized public residential high schools of its kind, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science + Mathematics (GSSM) exists to push motivated young learners beyond their perceived levels of academic ability. Founded in 1988 under the leadership of the late Governor Carroll Campbell, GSSM has consistently raised the bar for STEM education in the Palmetto State. GSSM’s two-year residential high school program—as well as its virtual high school program, summer camps, and outreach programs—all invite young people to explore the subjects they love in a diverse, inclusive, and uncommonly supportive academic environment. Here, challenge is viewed as a gateway to opportunity. GSSM students embrace the school’s rigorous approach to education and in so doing begin to realize their full potential.Learn more by visiting www.scgssm.org.
