              Thomas Hart Academy names Heather M. Atkinson as next head of school
              HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Thomas Hart Academy announced today the appointment of Heather M. Atkinson as the next head of school, effective June 1, 2025. Atkinson will succeed Tara Woodson, who has led the school with dedication and vision for the past three years.
              Atkinson, a Hartsville native, brings more than 20 years of educational experience to the role. Her passion for education has guided her career as a classroom teacher in the Darlington County School District and Emmanuel Christian School. She has held several administrative positions, including director of development, lower school principal, and interim head of school. Atkinson currently serves as director of curriculum and instruction at Pee Dee Math, Science and Technology Academy in Bishopville.
              “Mrs. Atkinson is an accomplished educator whose administrative experience aligns with our school’s mission,” said John Horlbeck, chair of Thomas Hart Academy’s Board of Director’s. “Her leadership and commitment to excellence will greatly benefit our students and the entire Thomas Hart community.”
              Atkinson expressed enthusiasm about her new role, saying: “For 23 years, I've had the privilege of serving students and families from all walks of life. Regardless of circumstances, I've learned that when there's a shared perspective of doing what's in the best interest of each child, unbreakable bonds form, and lasting relationships emerge as we witness our students experiencing success. I am thrilled to enter a new era with the stakeholders of Thomas Hart Academy, and I am confident we will achieve truly amazing things together.”
              Atkinson earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Francis Marion University and a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Texas at Arlington. She holds a school principal certification from the South Carolina Department of Education. Atkinson and her husband, Jon, have two sons, Brennan, a college freshman, and Brooks, a high school freshman.
              Enrollment at Thomas Hart Academy is currently open for all grade levels for the 2025-26 academic year.
